Snowy Day with the Sony A7C II & Viltrox 20mm f2.8

I bought a Sony + Viltrox

I’ve been toying with the idea of expanding my lens reviews on YouTube, but there’s been one major hurdle, Canon. Since I primarily shoot with Canon cameras, I’ve been limited by their decision to keep the RF mount closed to many third-party lens manufacturers. In my opinion, this is a bad business move by Canon. By restricting access to budget-friendly third-party lenses, they risk losing potential buyers who might opt for more versatile systems. With that in mind, I made the plunge, I bought a Sony A7C II and Viltrox 20mm f2.8 lens. Why? Because Sony’s E-mount is open to a wide range of third-party lenses, giving me the flexibility to explore and review more gear. I’ve received multiple requests over the past several months from companies wanting me to review their lenses, but I had to turn them down simply because they didn’t make RF mount versions. Now, with the A7C II, that’s about to change. If you’re one of my subscribers who loves lens reviews and comparisons, get ready, things are about to get more interesting!

First Impressions

We had a nice snowfall in Toronto overnight, which made for the perfect opportunity to test out my new gear. I took a stroll around the neighborhood and snapped some shots, and my first impressions are pretty positive. For a budget camera and lens combo, the images came out clean and crisp. I processed the RAW files in Capture One with minimal adjustments, and the results are great. One of my biggest concerns going into this was Sony’s color science. I previously owned a Sony A7III, and its color science was so strange that I ended up selling it. Thankfully, it seems like Sony has made significant improvements with the A7C II. I’ll need to do more testing, but so far, so good. Though it still looks like they are doing something strange to the red tones. The red bricks look like they have too much magenta in them. Check out the sample shots below, and stay tuned for more content with this camera and lens. I look forward to bringing some exciting new lens reviews to the channel.
