Lens Info - Canon RF16mm f2.8 STM
Canon RF 16mm f2.8 STM
The Canon RF 16mm f2.8 STM lens is a compact and versatile addition to the RF lens lineup. Boasting a wide 16mm focal length and a bright f2.8 aperture, this lens is ideal for capturing expansive landscapes, architectural details, and could be that perfect wide angle lens for your vlogging setup. The inclusion of a stepping motor (STM) ensures smooth autofocus performance, making it suitable for both still photography and video recording. There are two drawbacks to this lens. The first is the distortion. You’ll notice in sample shots taken with this lens that vertical lines towards the edges of the frame appear to be bent and objects towards the corners of the frame appear to be squished. If you are into shooting architectural photography I would recommend the RF 15-35mm f2.8 L or the older EF 16-35mm f2.8 L as they have corrective optics that prevent distortion. The other drawback to this 16mm f2.8 lens is that in order to keep costs down Canon used resin elements in it’s design. Light transmission through plastic isn’t the same as glass and there is a drop in overall contrast and micro-contrast in images shot with this lens. In conclusion with its lightweight and portable design, the RF 16mm f2.8 STM is a convenient choice for photographers on the go, offering decent optical performance and great portability. The lens is a valuable tool for enthusiasts and professionals alike who seek a compact wide-angle option for their RF cameras.
