Here are some low light portraits of Asha. It’s always a pleasure to work with her. For this set I took inspiration from Treats Magazine Issue 13, Kelsie Smeby cover. It’s one of my favorite magazine covers ever. I wanted to play around with my lights and see if I could create something similar and learn something new from the experience. I used my Gobo with the narrow slit insert and projected a narrow beam of light onto the model. I put a red gel over the gobo to change the color of the light and let in just a little enough window light to cast some blue daylight balanced light onto the background. I could have used a giant softbox to cast light onto Asha and the background but I wanted sunlight as it would naturally cast a blueish light to contrast the red light created by the gobo.

These images were a good first start. I was excited by the contrast between the light and dark areas. However, when I started editing the shots I realized my Key light was too bright and I lost a lot of important textures in the face. Something to keep in mind when I revisit this concept.
