4 LIGHT SETUP FOR YOUTUBE
Lighting is so important. It adds a lot of character and depth to your videos. Today I’m going to share with you one of my favorite lighting setups for YouTube. It may seem a little complicated if you’re just starting out but brake down each light and talk about why I have it setup the way I do. By the end of this video you’ll be able to take this info and apply it to your lighting setup. If you have any questions drop a comment below.
The first light in this setup is the key light because it’s the main light in the setup and the one that is lighting up my face. The other lights are just accenting my face or the background.
The second light and third light are setup opposite from each other. Light Two crating a blue accent on one side of my face and Light Three working as an edge ight on the other side of my face and body. This edge light creates depth to the overall look and also separates me from the dark background. This allows me to wear a dark jacket in front of a dark background without fading into the background. Setting up Light Two and Three on opposite sides of me with one light in front of me and one behind me is also called a sandwich lighting setup.
Light 4 is hidden from view behind the soft-box. It’s color is set to the same color as Light Two and it’s purpose is to illuminate the background and create continuity between the blue light on my face and the blue background. You can also use complimentary colors to add visual appeal to a setup. I would avoid using contrasting colors as they usually draw attention away from the subject and creates tension. But that can also be a useful trick if you’re trying to build tension.
If you don’t have the same lights as me don’t worry it’s all good. You can take this setup and build it with any lights you have. If you’re on a budget you can even set this up with table lamps. All you have to do is apply the setup to whatever lights you’re using and it’s all good. There is no right way or wrong way to setup your lights as long as you create something with purpose. Thanks for reading hopefully you enjoyed this video. I’ve got a series of these lighting videos coming up so subscribe to the channel to catch them all.
