WELCOME TO MY SIDE SIDE HUSTLE URBAN WINDOWS!
THE PAST
I started Urban Windows in 2015 as a little side project. I found myself spending more and more time in front of my computer editing and it kind of got a little tiresome looking at my screens all day. I didn’t like feeling trapped indoors all the time so I had an idea. I started collecting videos of different urban environments that I would play on my TV as I worked. Just having that virtual window into the world helped relax me and keep me focused on the task at hand. Eventually I ran out of hard drive space so I decided to upload all my videos to YouTube so I could stream them for myself. Initially the channel was private but after more and more friends got interested in the concept I made the channel public and here you are reading about on my webpage.
HOW IT WORKS
I have two types of videos on Urban Windows. First I have my daily vibes. Sunrise vibes spanning from 6am to 9am the pre workday videos. Then I have the morning vibes which go from 9am till noon for the first half of the workday. Next are the afternoon vibes spanning from 12noon till 6pm which line up with the second half of the work day. Finally I have Sunset vibes and night vibes to finish off the day. What I do is make a playlist with the videos I want and then play it on my TV. The videos line up with the timing of the real day and it feels somewhat authentic. Each video is is 30min so you can build out your day however you want.
The other type of videos are 8 hour blackout screens. These videos give you 8 hours of relaxing sounds to help you have a full night’s sleep. All jarring and loud noises are removed from that videos to ensure that the sounds don’t wake you up. All the Blackout Screen videos have a 5min blackout timer so your phone screen will slowly fade to black as you rest. It’s a nice slow 5 minute transition to ease you into sleep mode. These blackout screens have really taken off in popularity and get more views than my other videos. So I’ve got a a bunch more blackout screens planned for the channel.
THE FUTURE
At this point I’m focused on growing my photography and videography business and that’s my main focus. But with that being said I’ve really enjoyed this Urban Windows project. Gives me a reason to get out there during a storm to capture some video. It’s been a fun process so far and I look forward to adding more content to the channel.
SUBMISSIONS
I was thinking about opening up the Urban Windows channel to other video creators. Maybe create a team of 5 - 10 creators working together to create content. Just a thought at this point but if you’re interested in collaborating and sending in some videos for the channel contact me and we can talk about it. Once the channel is monetized royalties would be split accordingly. Just an idea at this point. Putting it out there to see how it evolves.
