CANON EOS R5 PHOTO TEST
I recently picked up the Canon EOS R5. On paper the camera looks like it’s going to be a proper beast. 45 megapixel Cmos sensor, Digic X processor, 100% auto focus point coverage, Wifi connectivity to wirelessly transfer images to other devices and it’s the first camera body from Canon to feature IBIS. Not to mention the most exciting feature of them all an upgrade to Canon’s class leading Dual Pixel AF with Dual Pixel AF II. This is supposed to take eye tracking AF to the next level and make the feature way more sticky. All very impressive on paper but the true test of a camera comes down to how it feels in the hands and how easy it is to capture the vision I have in my mind.
I took the EOS R5 on a nature walk and spent some time snapping shots to get a feel for the camera. All photos were shot with the RF 24-105mm f4L IS. I don’t typically shoot landscapes and nature but every now and than I enjoy the challenge of something different. This camera is so new that Adobe hasn’t yet released an update to read the new .CR3 format raws. So I shot full resolution jpg and converted them into black and white with Lightroom. I was really surprised at the quality of the jpg files. I was able to bring a lot of detail back from the shadows and blowouts when I wanted. I can’t wait to see what I can do with the actual raw files. These are my fave photos from my first adventure with the EOS R5.
My initial takeaways from this first shoot. Firstly I am very impressed with the quality of the jpg files. Secondly i’m impressed by the level of detail this camera can resolve. This is a 45 megapixel sensor and my previous everyday camera was the EOS R which has a 30 megapixel sensor. The EOS R5’s extra 15 megapixels are definitely noticeable. If there is one negative to the EOS R5 it’s that the slightly bigger body/grip is not something I enjoyed. The original EOS R feels a lot better in my hands. More thoughts on the R5 to come. Enjoy the photos.
