CAN YOU MAKE HIGH ISO VIDEO WITH AN EOS R5 FOR YOUTUBE?

Welcome to another video where we explore the Canon EOS R5 and its capabilities. I have a link below with more of my R5 content. I’ve recently been very excited by the low light capabilities of the Sony A7sIII. I haven’t had the pleasure of working with one yet but as soon as this pandemic is over I’ll link up with some fellow content creators to do some side by side tests. Needless to say I was really intrigued by the A7sIII’s ability to shoot in low light and I wanted to put the EOS R5 to the test to see how high I could push the ISO before the footage started to fall apart.

I was pleasantly surprised at how well the EOS R5 handled noise at higher ISOs. I feel like the magic number for detail is ISO 6400. Anything above that and the crispiness of the image is really lost. Footage starts to look like it came from a smart phone from 2010. Despite that I feel like you can still film YouTube content at ISO 6400. Once you start pushing past ISO 12800 the detail starts to really fall off and I would say that is the ISO limit for filming YouTube content while still retaining a somewhat decent looking video. At ISO 25600 the footage out of the R5 gets really noisy and in my opinion is unusable for most YouTube content.

I shot all the footage for this video at f2.8 using the EF 16-35 f2.8 L. I used a variable neutral density filter to control exposure as I climbed up the ISO range. During the ISO testing part of the video I put a color grade on the left side of the video and left the rite side of the video as it was right out of camera. I was shooting in 4k 24p All-I at f2.8 1/50. I didn’t use any software to remove noise. The color grade was simply used to adjust highlights, shadows and tint.

Now to answer the big question I set out to answer at the start of this video. Is the R5 capable of shooting usable YouTube content at high ISOs and the answer is YES. Overall I’m very happy with the performance of the Canon EOS R5 in this low light video test. It certainly falls in line with what I was expecting out of this camera when I got it. But with the A7sIII pushing the limits of low light video the next generation of Canon cameras is going to have to make a significant leap forward to keep pace.
